The 14th century Lievevrouwepoort in Bergen op Zoom, better known as Gevangenpoort, is the still visible figurehead of the once so formidable fortifications of the city of Bergen op Zoom.

For centuries, it was the main entrance gate to the completely walled fortress.

It was not until the construction of the harbour quarter west of this gate that the building took on the function of ‘Huis van Bewaring’ or prison. The traces of both its military and prison history are still clearly visible.

A visit to this almost 700-year-old monument is certainly worthwhile. Let the guide’s stories surprise you and get lost in the city’s past.

De Gevangenpoort is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 13.00 to 16.30 hours.
