Also this year, traditionally the last Sunday of June, the Maria Ommegang passes through the old centre of Bergen op Zoom. The Maria Ommegang is a cultural and historical phenomenon. This procession of thanks, in honour of Maria, takes place because Bergen op Zoom was spared, relatively speaking, great war violence during the Second World War. Historical groups, biblical scenes, floats and singing and dancing groups alternate.

The procession consists of no less than 900 participants, young and old, divided over 70 groups and supported by 6 carriages. The Maria Ommegang harks back to the Holy Cross procession, as it passed through Bergen op Zoom in the Middle Ages. The clothing, the props, the wagons and the game that is performed, make a great impression and provide a beautiful spectacle.
