The Peperbus

On the Grote Markt square, the church’s striking tower, popularly known as the Peperbus (Pepperbox), immediately catches the eye. St. Gertrudis Church, located behind it, is equally remarkable.

The church has withstood many disasters, a fact reflected in its architecture. A journey of discovery through the various architectural styles, past the numerous works of art, and the monumental organs in the church will give you the special feeling that characterizes this church: wonder, reverence, and a strong sense of history.

During your visit to St. Gertrudis Church, you can also climb the church tower, known as the Peperbus (Pepperbox), to enjoy the view over Bergen op Zoom and visit the newly furnished tower room, Gradatus.

For safety reasons, children under 5 years old and/or shorter than 1 meter are not permitted to climb the Peperbus. Would you like to climb the Peperbus and visit the Tower Room, but have difficulty walking? You can take a virtual tour with VR glasses. Our volunteers will be happy to tell you more.
